Stufen

Steps

As every blossom wilts and every youth
Yields to age, so blooms every step of life,
So blooms every wisdom and every virtue too
In its time and may not last forever.
With every call of life, my heart
Must be ready to part and to begin anew,
So that it may, with courage and without grief,
Surrender to new engagements.
And in every beginning lives a magic,
Protecting us and helping us to live.

Merrily should we stride from space to space,
Clinging to none as though it was our home,
The pulse of life does not want to fetter or restrict,
It wants to lift us step by step and to enlarge.
Barely settled in a sphere of life
Immersed in coziness, contentment threatens.
Only those ready to part and travel
May break from crippling habituation.

Perhaps even the hour of death
Will dispatch us towards novel spaces,
The call of life to us will never end…
Well then, my heart, take leave and fare thee well!
